Description:
Sol Gabetta joins Il Giardino Armonico and Giovanni Antonini for Il dolce far niente, an evening dedicated to Joseph Haydn and the spirit of musical lightness. The programme forms part of the Haydn2032 project, launched by the Joseph Haydn Foundation Basel with the aim of performing and recording all of Haydn’s symphonies by the composer’s 300th anniversary in 2032.

The concert presents three symphonic rarities alongside one of Haydn’s finest cello concertos, with Sol Gabetta as soloist. The Symphony No. 21 in A major belongs to Haydn’s early period and reveals an almost chamber-like character, while the C major “Sinfonia per la Spagna”, still absent from the official catalogue, suggests a possible connection with a Spanish court patron. The programme concludes with Symphony No. 51 in B-flat major, a work from Haydn’s middle period, notable for its demanding horn writing and more dramatic expressive profile.

A listening introduction with Davide Fersini takes place at 6.45pm in the Aula SUPSI, Locarno, in Italian, with German available on request.

In collaboration with Haydn2032 of the Joseph Haydn Foundation Basel.
