Carissimi: Jonas (Live) brings together Il Giardino Armonico and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks under the direction of Giovanni Antonini in a programme tracing the emergence of dramatic musical expression between the late Renaissance and the early Baroque.
At its centre is Giacomo Carissimi’s Jonas, one of the landmarks of the early oratorio, in which biblical narrative, solo recitation and richly varied choral writing — including the dramatic double chorus depicting the storm — combine to create an unusually vivid theatrical structure.
The programme is completed by Claudio Monteverdi’s Lamento d’Arianna in its five-part madrigal version and excerpts from Orlando di Lasso’s Lagrime di San Pietro and Prophetiae Sibyllarum. Recorded live at Munich’s Prinzregententheater on 22 and 23 November 2024, the album was released by BR-Klassik in January 2026.
